Egisholz
Markgräflerland, Germany
The Place
High above the Rhine valley, at the edge of the Markgräflerland, lies the property where Konrad Winzer has lived and worked for decades. A former farmhouse from 1719 – conspicuously inconspicuous, set into the landscape. Forest's edge, vastness, silence.
From here the view reaches across the Rhine valley to Basel. Vastness and proximity lie close together – Black Forest, vineyards, France, Switzerland.
Workshop and Garden
Between Herzkammer and garden lies the actual center: workshop and kitchen merge into one another. Sculptures of stone and wood stand between stove, table and tools. What emerges here does not emerge in the studio in the classical sense – but in the midst of life.
In the garden stand stone sculptures from earlier years. They order the space without fixing it. Some figures do not look at us – they look out with us.
The Place as Condition
The place is not a backdrop. It is a condition of the work. Seclusion, material, time – these are not romantic concepts, but practical prerequisites.
